Tracey Sweetland’s Impact as SASP Sport Welfare Officer

We continue to support safer, more inclusive sport across the county through the work of our Sport Welfare Officer, Tracey Sweetland. Since being in post (2024), Tracey has been central to helping local sports clubs, club volunteers and safeguarding officers enhance welfare practices and safeguarding provisions for children, young people, and adults across Somerset.

Working with the South West region of Sports Partnerships, we have been working together closely this year to provide coherent and consistent messaging and support through the Sport Welfare festival that took place earlier in 2025. The festival contained key resources, workshops and deliveries of training across the region/online to best support clubs and organisations.

Under Tracey’s guidance, clubs are becoming better equipped to identify and address welfare issues before they escalate, creating safer environments for everyone involved in sport in Somerset.

About Sport Welfare Officers: Sport Welfare Officers support club welfare officers by providing local assistance, training, and networking opportunities to enhance safeguarding and welfare in sports. They help clubs meet their responsibilities, connect with other welfare officers, and promote best practices. However, they do not manage safeguarding concerns, which must be referred to the appropriate authorities. Funded by Sport England, they collaborate with governing bodies and safeguarding organisations to create safe and positive sporting environments.
